Florida Citizens Prioritize Hurricane Response

Late summer 2004, four hurricanes hit the Gulf Coast of Florida, devastating Charlotte, DeSoto, and Hardee counties. In November, AmericaSpeaks partnered with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to develop and facilitate four public meetings that would ensure FEMA long-term recovery planning reflected the priorities of those people most directly affected by the hurricanes.

FEMA recovery teams used the community priorities established at each of these meetings to further study and strengthen its initiatives in each county. FEMA then worked with its partners in the federal and state governments, all of whom actively participated throughout the planning process, to find dedicated funding sources for the prioritized recovery activities.
